Research summary
This study examined the nutritional resources consumed by free-range chickens in Assam.
Objective
Assess differences associated with sex, season and agro-climatic location.
Methodology / scope
Researchers analysed crop contents from 160 chickens, equally divided by sex, sampled across four zones and four seasons.
Main findings
Feed composition and nutrient measures varied with location and season. Several essential nutrients were insufficient in the scavenged diets.
Conclusion
The authors proposed season- and location-sensitive supplemental feeding strategies, rather than treating scavenging resources as nutritionally uniform.
